surely Townsend wont be allowed to get away with this unsubstantiated piffle. Whilst ultimately leasees are risk takers and should be subject to changing market conditions, they should also experience the profits of good times so they can save for a rainy day. Under the tie this simply does not happen with profits guzzled by the pub cos. When the downturn comes there is no fat in the licensees business and the pub co has given it all away in dividends and bonuses. This systematic mis-management of peoples lives is criminal and needs to change or pubs will simply disappear. Corporate negligence is a crime yet many of the units pub cos are leasing amount to straight forward theft (no exaggeration).

So the speculators and money launderers would like the tax payer to subsidise their business model for them. Here's a different suggestion. Remove the extortionate 'premium' charged on beer and base the rent on the actual profit of the business, that way they're a proper 'partner' and will have more interest in placing people capable of running the business in their pubs rather than installing the first person who comes along with money to lose.
