Mark.. I am aware of all the facts, but the key factor remains that the trade is doing nothing constructive to combat current and future threats. Look abroad to countries such as Germany and France, their hospitality sectors are actively rebelling, not sitting in front of keyboards blogging on site such as this. These countries along with others will very soon form a unified body to take the issues to the heart of the EU member states as being unified there is strength in numbers. The U.K. hospitality sector will no doubt continue to bury its head in the sand.

Wake up U.K.

Over the past months I have been involved in Pan European discussions about forming a Coalition Against Prohibition. We have contributors from Denmark, Holland, Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and will soon be joined by Switzerland. The most recent organisation expressing an interest is the Association of Dutch Coffee Shops, I point this out as for this sector is hurting just as much as pubs in the UK with the changes to business legislation.

RE: 10% profit drop since smoke ban for hosts

El Nino

The full text of the letter, hope this doesn't contravene state secret act or something:

From Undersecretary to John Hutton Sec of state for Trade and Consumer affairs.

Thank you Blah, blah. "Ensuring that markets operate freely and fairly is a matter for the independent competition authorities, rather than Government. The Enterprise Act 2002 removed Ministers from competition decicions, placing them in the hands of the UK competition authorities. The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) is the primary competition and consumer protection authority, with responsibilities covering the whole economy. Part of their role includes investigating markets for instance, the brewery trade, and, if it suspects them of having features, which adversely affect competition, will refer them to the Competition Commission for further investigation.

Your Constituent should be aware that this market was last considered in July 2005 when the OFT announced that it would not initiate such an investigation, commenting that "The market for the supply of beer has been extensively examined in recent years by the OFT and the CC. It has been found to be broadly competitive and in the process of development."

Mr Thomas goes on to say: The tied house has long been recognised as having advantages for both brewers and licensees, with no detriment to consumers.

He then refers further queries to OFT.

RE: 10% profit drop since smoke ban for hosts

This was my letter (e-mail) to my mp, who forwarded it on to BERR etc:

Please will you sign EDM 674 on behalf of myself and the many publicans struggling to 'make ends meet' in your constituency. Not only are the Pub Companies s******g their tenants on rent, they (allegedly) obtain hidden rent with the 'Beer Tie' which is not always restricted to beer. Their mark up on a barrel supplied to their tenants / lessees is as much as 100% - with dubious benefits. See clause 133 of the DTI enquiry into the Pub Companies. It is a monopoly, and a restrictive practice. Rent reviews are (allegedly) neither transparent nor fair. With the various new legislation, (Fire Regs, Smoking bans, New licensing laws, Disabled Act) capital expenditure has increased without any increase in income. Increased scrutiny by Inland Revenue, tightening of lease clauses by the Pub Cos, and general spiralling of expenses (energy, rates, purchases) has cut profits to the bone. Minimum wage increases (probably 40% in 4 years), plus extra staff holidays have added to an already heavy workload, reducing my / wife's wage to £3 an hour, on an 70 hour week with 1 weeks holiday a year if we're lucky. It is no wonder many pubs are closing. Rural ones were first, town pubs will rapidly follow. Please help.
My M.P. promised to press the Government to change its mind on the matter - fair do's
