I've never heard of Amanda Palmer, or Amanda Fucking Palmer as the search engine describes for her website link. Marvellous TED talk she did last week:
She's at the front end of a revolutionary change in music performance and distribution. She's presenting in front of a thousand guests telling her story - the story that got her into the situation where they all want to listen to her. The dollars are part of the story. The dollars came via a route completely outside the conventional - and they are voluntary dollars - the people who put the money up can choose to take the music without paying.
This broadly, is why her message is so powerful. She's on the cusp of a possible paradigm transformation in the way retail transactions are done.
