The bar to long term success has been raised because pressure has been put on pubcos to share profit with tenants and to think and act creatively in their business relationships with others. For the first time in decades pubcos have been finally exposed to the risks they traditionally have been cushioned from by a thick layer of tenant wadding. Pubcos who come up with genuinely new solutions to age old industry problems, who act creatively, who understand the value of Human Capital in the pub business, who invest wisely (see Alan Parker talking through his 09/10 year http://bit.ly/cDKGbo) in future business, will be the ones who survive the market ups and downs and the battering of legislation that is coming. Marston's are beginning to talk the walk, now they have show they can walk it because there's not a lot of sign on the ground that it's anything other than business as usual.
