Berwick Upon Tweed. Been in the area again for a couple of days. "A town on its knees all the pubs are going" is what I was told in one. They said three pubs have closed in recent weeks - two for ever apparently - and that all the others are struggling. The once thriving Pubwatch has fallen apart because 'all the pubco places only last a year and the lessees never have time to get involved'.

Belford, the village I know best, has three pubs. One is a freehold attached to a hotel the others are tied. One TAW after being closed for half of 2008, possibly about to go on a term lease, the other has just closed.

So much for pub is the hub (Punch flag this up in the CSR section of their website) and pubcos supporting comunities.
